What Is Anchor Text?

Anchor text is text on a page with a clickable hyperlink attached to it. You’ll want to use anchor text when linking to another source whether that be another URL, a PDF document, or any other online media.

Here’s an example of HTML featuring anchor text:

In this example, “SEO Platform” is the anchor text.

What are anchor text best practices?

While you don’t have control over the anchor text other sites use to link back to your website, you do have the ability to choose your own. It is ideal to keep your anchor text at a minimum and has been since Google Penguin was released. While there is no standard number of words to use as anchor text, search engines are paying attention to your anchor text and the keywords used within them. When considering what to link to via your anchor text, keep page relevance in mind. Linking to an irrelevant page won’t help your rankings when bots crawl your site. Part of your SEO strategy should be to link to the most relevant, informational pages you have to offer.

What types of anchor text are there?

The different types of anchor text include the following:

  • Exact match. Exact match anchor text refers to using the page’s targeted keyword you want to rank for as anchor text. For example, using “anchor text” as the anchor text for this page.
  • Partial match. Using partial match anchor text means you use your targeted keyword as well as other keywords. For example, using “understanding link text” as your anchor text when optimizing for “anchor text.”
  • Phrase match. This type of anchor text refers to using the phrase you want to rank for amongst other keywords related to the phrase. An example of this is “guide to using anchor text for SEO.”
  • Branded. Branded anchor text is simply anchor text using the name of your brand. For example, “BrightEdge SEO Platform.”
  • Naked. Naked anchor text is simply the URL as the anchor text. For example, “www.brightedge.com” as the anchor text. This is an unpreferred way of using text as it can be seen as clunky in the middle of content.
  • Generic. Generic anchor text is essentially a CTA. An example includes “click here” or “learn more.”
  • Images. Image anchor text is also similar to a CTA. Here, you will use anchor text on an image. For example, “Demo BrightEdge Today!” as a button on an image would be the anchor text. You will also need to provide image alt text

Simple facts about using anchor text

  • Be sure to link the entire link in your anchor text. Missing a character could result in broken links or errors and create a poor UX for site visitors.
  • Link to secure links (HTTPS) as Google Chrome has recently blocked mixed content AKA the use of both HTTP and HTTPS.
  • You can use multiple anchor text in one sentence or one paragraph of your content. There is no SEO law against doing so.
  • Use anchor text in your email campaigns to link to your site.
